Hi, I’m Heather Zachau.
My mother, Ann, an Iyengar enthusiast in the 1970s, introduced me to yoga at an early age. Heather started practicing intermittently in the early 2000s after my mother’s death and the birth of three children. Various joint and muscle injuries slowed down my active life of running and skiing.
I discovered a new studio in 2011, Freeport Yoga Company, which changed my yoga life. If I had had yoga in my life and listened to my mother, I would have had a better understanding of my body and how it is all interconnected and possibly avoided injury. I want to take that knowledge that I have learned personally to students, both young and old, to ensure that they understand the interconnectedness of mind, body, and soul.
Through vinyasa yoga, I completed my 200-hour yoga certification with Boston Yoga School, focusing on history, philosophy, and body anatomy. Since then, I have finished 95+ hours of RCYT training with the incredible staff from Childlight Yoga, including certifications for babies to teens, and special populations; she also completed her 500-hour training in Yin yoga with the Yin Yoga School and lastly completed certifications in restorative yoga, aerial yoga and yoga for athletes! She teaches at LLBean and continues teaching yoga, breathing techniques, and mindfulness for the sports teams in local area high schools.
As a full-time elementary school teacher, I have been working with school-age students, helping them to utilize strength, flexibility, coordination, breathing techniques, and body awareness through yoga and mindful meditation. I believe that teaching teens and adults the benefits of yoga will help them stay more focused, help prevent injuries, calm their minds, build confidence, and help them learn strategies to manage stress. Positive social-emotional development is crucial to becoming well-adjusted and happy as we grow. This practice will help them stay more focused, calm their minds, build confidence, and learn strategies to manage stress. Positive social-emotional development is crucial to becoming well-adjusted and more confident in ourselves.
I continue to be an avid biker, hiker, skier, and walker!
